#GoingToAfrica

The AIDS epidemic is bigger than a tweet from a person in PR. If we want real change, we need to think beyond Justine.

Let’s turn that anger into something tangible.

Sam Bakkila of PolicyMic sent us this great email:

#HasJustineLanded has really struck a chord with twitter activists, not just because it is racist and offensive on its own terms, but also because it mirrors the racism that has shaped both the course of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, as well as the international response to HIV/AIDS, that has far too often denied treatment to Africans, African Americans and people of the African Diaspora.

Sam links to the South African Treatment Action Campaign, a South African AIDS activist organization with an anti-apartheid history. TAC has been credited with forcing the government of former South African President Thabo Mbeki to begin making antiretroviral drugs available to South Africans.
